Man charged in connection with 'tiger' kidnapping

A man was charged today with possessing €61,000 in stolen cash in connection with a tiger kidnapping in Dublin last Friday.

Shortly after 6.30am on May 28, a woman was taken from her house in Ballyfermot and her husband was forced to take money from an Ulster Bank branch where he worked. His wife was freed that day with no physical injuries, in Co. Meath.

Members from the Organised Crime Unit supported by the Emergency Response Unit arrested a man in his mid-20s at Kimmage Road West, on Friday afternoon last and a sum of money was also recovered.

After his arrest the man was detained under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007.

Today Mr Edward McCarthy (aged 23), of Reuben St, Dublin 8, was brought before Dublin District Court and charged under Section 18 of the Theft and Fraud Offences Act for possession of stolen money in the sum of €61,000, at Kimmage Road West, on May 28 last.

Detective Denis Smith told Judge Cormac Dunne that Mr McCarthy was arrested at Clondalkin Garda station this morning. He made no reply to charge after caution, the court heard.

Det-Gda Smith applied for a remand in custody and said there would be an objection to bail.

Judge Dunne remanded the accused in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court on June 8 next and deferred a bail application until then.

Defence solicitor Shane Reynolds told Judge Dunne that his client was unemployed and applied for legal aid, which was granted.
