Bugsy's Boy takes Three Musketeers Trophy at Goodwood
Previous experience at Goodwood was unnecessary for David England as Bugsy's Boy (15-2) gave him an armchair first ride at the course in the Three Musketeers Trophy today.
Like England in this jump jockeys' challenge, Bugsy's Boy had last been seen over obstacles in May but he was on the top of his game back on the level and was pushed out to win by four lengths.
Trainer George Baker said: "David has been riding out for us all summer and although Andrew Tinkler is our main jump jockey, I'm sure he was looking on jealously from Ffos Las today!
"We might try to find something else on the Flat but that should set the horse up for the winter."
Richard Hughes had evidently sniffed an opportunity for another victory and was allowed to ride in the race after his experiences over hurdles but his mount, Zelos Diktator, beat only one home.
R Woody (11-2) is a sprinter who likes to get his toe in and struck for the third time since moving to Dean Ivory's care this year in the Toyo Tires Speed Stakes.
The running order hardly changed throughout the six furlongs, with jockey George Baker up at the head of affairs and the combination had the measure of Lochan Mor by a comfortable three-quarters of a length.
Ivory said: "I had been a bit worried about the ground but I walked it and it was softer than I thought.
"He kept finding and he just loves the game. He's still only three, so I hope he'll keep improving."
Mahmood Al Zarooni fielded two of the three market leaders in the EBF Goodwood Racecourse Owners Group Nursery and Double Dealer proved it to be a worthwhile exercise in the first colours of Godolphin.
Paul Hanagan had made the long journey south in a bid to keep Hughes at bay in the title race and he was in front with a furlong to run aboard Inside.
But Double Dealer (4-1), bouncing back from a poor run at Pontefract, held the aces inside the distance and came a length and a half clear of Uncle Dermot.
Jockey Royston Ffrench said: "I got a nice position in behind horses, he settled well, and looks to be progressing nicely."
Hanagan took his lead over Hughes to nine after leading home a Mick Quinlan one-two in the Bet At Bluesq.com Median Auction Maiden Stakes.
The jockey had to get stuck into Celtic Sixpence (2-1), second on her three other starts, to compile a two and a half length victory over Its You Again.
"We try to get Paul if we can, but it's not easy. He said she'd be nice next year," reported Quinlan.
Tom Queally was thrown from Certral in the paddock, and the filly got loose and had to be withdrawn.
Clerk of the course Seamus Buckley reported: "He's OK, he's just relaxing at the moment and he might just need the day off tomorrow."
However, Hanagan was hit with an untimely one-day suspension (October 25) for using his whip in the incorrect place.
