Officials in Croatia are still trying to identify the five tourists killed in an accident in the north-west of the country yesterday morning.

It is believed three of the dead are Irish.

The driver of the mini-bus in which they were travelling also died when the van collided with a truck near Pula.

It is understood the group was on their way to Slovenia when the crash happened.

The bodies have been taken to a local hospital where autopsies are being carried out this afternoon.

A sixth tourist - also believed to be Irish - survived but is in a critical condition in hospital.

Sonja Djerasimovic of the Croatian news agency HINA says they still don't know what caused the accident:

“It was a frontal crash between a very big Italian truck and this little van”, she said.

“The Italian truck tried to stop and this all happened on his part of the road.”

She added: “There was no-one else involved, so obviously the little van with the tourists, somehow lost control and went into the Italian truck.”
