Lampard hails returning hero

Chelsea’s two-goal hero Frank Lampard welcomed Joe Cole’s return to the starting line-up as the Blues thrashed Blackburn 5-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Cole started his first Premier League match since suffering a knee injury against Southend in January and Lampard was delighted to see his England team-mate back in the side.

He told ESPN: “He is different class. I think everyone knows what Coley brings us, he is something different, he runs with the ball and he can create something out of nothing.”

Cole added: “When you’re out for 10 months just getting back on the training pitch is great so to come back to a game like that was fantastic. I’m just so happy to be playing.”

The Blues only led 1-0 at half-time thanks to a Gael Givet own goal after squandering a host of chances.

But four second-half goals inside 15 minutes – two for Lampard and one each for Didier Drogba and Michael Essien, handed Sam Allardyce his biggest defeat since he took charge at Ewood Park.

For Lampard it took him to three goals in two games after going 10 games without scoring.

Lampard added: “In the end we had to work for it. Blackburn are a difficult team to play against. Once we broke the deadlock and pushed on at the start of the second half that was it.

“Sometimes you have to wait for them, you go through those patches.”

It was a positive response to the defeat at Aston Villa last weekend, when Chelsea were beaten by two goals from set-pieces.

Lampard said: “We were disappointed after last week. We wanted to bounce back and we did it in style.”
