A man has been rescued from the River Shannon in Limerick City.

A man has been rescued from the River Shannon in Limerick City.

Emergency services received an alert around 5.30pm of a man seen entering the river close to the Curraghgower Boat Club.

Three units of Limerick City & County Fire and Rescue Service responded to the scene within three minutes and launched its FIRESWIFT rapid response speed boat.

Upon arriving at the scene, Swiftwater Rescue Technician firefighters (SRTs) entered the river and brought the man to safety.

The man, who is in his mid-late 20s, was removed by ambulance by HSE paramedics to University Hospital Limerick.

The man is understood to be suffering from body shock, due to hypothermia from the current cold water temperatures, but his condition is not believed to be life threatening.
