There were been angry scenes in the Dail today when the leaders of the opposition were informed that their right to ask topical questions of the Taoiseach is to be withdrawn.

The Ceann Comhairle confirmed the move, saying changes would have to be made indicating the scope of the procedure before the facility is returned.

However, questions relating to the North will still be permitted.

Fine Gael chief whip Charles Flanagan warned the Ceann Comhairle that there was a danger the public would perceive him as protecting the government by restricting debate.
