A gunman tried to kill a top loyalist on his way to work in north Belfast today.

He fired a shot at a car being driven by Davy Mahood, 53, before his weapon jammed. He then escaped on a motorcycle.

The attack happened close to a car park on the city’s Oldpark Road near the junction with Deerpark Road.

Mr Mahood, a member of the Ulster Political Research Group, was on his way to his office in the neighbouring Ballysillan area.

Police confirmed they were investigating a shooting incident.

Police were alerted when Mr Mahood flashed his car lights at an oncoming police Land Rover.

Afterwards he said: “I was terrified, but I don’t know who was responsible. The bullet missed. The gun jammed and when he tried to clear it, it jammed again. He was standing in a car park at the time.”
