The FBI has issued an unprecedented warning in relation to a major internet virus, which is due to activate in the early hours of Wednesday morning Irish time.

The 'code red worm', which was first raised on the July 19 will continue infecting computers for the first 20 days of the month.

The virus defaces web sites and can also be easily changed to destroy them entirely.

It has already been used to shut down the White House web site.

The FBI has teamed up with the computer giants, Microsoft, to try to tackle the virus.

Both say the internet is under a distinct threat.
