Fine Gael is preparing to unveil tough new proposals on sentencing and bail restrictions for serious repeat offenders.

The party is taking legal advice on the plan, which includes removing the "get-out clause" from mandatory minimum sentences.

They are also expected to suggest giving the state the right of appeal against court decisions to grant bail.

The proposals, which will be highlighted in a €250,000 advertising campaign, will be officially launched at the party's annual conference next weekend.
