Searches for a young soldier missing since Thursday resumed this morning in Galway.

Twenty-one-year-old Ben Garrett was last seen on Eglinton Street at around a 1.45am near a nightclub.

Private Garrett, who is originally from Castlebar in Co Mayo, was last seen wearing dark jeans and a light blue Hollister jumper.

He is described as approximately 6 feet tall, with a slim, athletic build and short brown hair. He is based at Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa barracks in Renmore in Galway city.

Captain Damien Kelleher of the Defence Forces has encouraged members of the public to take part in the search, which includes a focus on the coast at Oranmore.

Mr Garrett’s sister Shannon said the family was grateful to all those taking part in the search.
