Department of Finance denies trying to get economist sacked

The Department of Finance has denied suggestions that it attempted to have one of the country's best known economists sacked from his job because of his criticism of them.

The Department of Finance has today denied suggestions that it attempted to have one of the country's best known economists sacked from his job.

In an address to the MacGill summer school in Glenties, Friends First chief economist Jim Power said the Department made a formal complaint to his employer over his outspoken views 18 months ago.

However, the Department says it merely contacted Mr Power's employers to find out if his criticisms were being expressed in a personal capacity or on behalf of his company.

A spokesman for the Department also described as 'rubbish' claims that it attempted to have Mr Power sacked from his position.
