The Health Minister has admitted that it is not acceptable that almost half of patients on trollies in hospital Accident and Emergency units are not admitted within the target six hours.

It is four years since Mary Harney declared the number of people on trollies in hospitals a "national emergency".

However, Minister Harney said there would always be some people on trollies in A and E units.

"I'm not aware of any hospital in the world - and I've visited some of the best - where there aren't trollies in A and E…but it's not satisfactory that 48% of patients are not admitted within the six-hour period," she said.
