Legislation paving the way for the establishment of an independent garda ombudsman is due to be published later today.

The proposed three-person Ombudsman Commission will replace the current system whereby gardaí investigate complaints made against their colleagues.

The Government has been under pressure to establish an independent complaints body for some time due to concerns some gardaí could abuse their powers.

The Garda Bill due to be published today also includes provisions for the establishment of local policing committees to oversee garda policy and practice.
