Four Irish beaches failed to meet EU bathing water standards last year due to high levels of pollution.

Reports this morning said the European Commission’s annual report on bathing water quality said beaches in Balbriggan, Bray, Spiddal and Achill were too polluted for safe bathing.

Untreated sewage was identified as the main problem in Balbriggan and Bray, while agricultural pollution was blamed for the poor quality of the beaches in Spiddal and Achill.
