Messi untroubled by lack of goals

Lionel Messi is not letting his goalscoring drought affect him as long as Argentina continue to win at the World Cup.

The Albiceleste edged Nigeria 1-0 in their Group B opener before crushing South Korea 4-1.

The Barcelona star had plenty of chances to score in both encounters but was denied by great goalkeeping.

“It’s not a problem,” said Messi. “The important thing is that I had opportunities and although the ball didn’t go in, eventually it will.”

Heading into the World Cup, the 22-year-old had endured difficult times in the Argentina shirt under coach Diego Maradona.

He still averages less than a goal every three games at international level, a disappointing tally for the FIFA World Player of the Year.

“The goal will come,” he said. “I am happy that Gonzalo Higuain scored a hat-trick against South Korea and I am delighted for the team.

“We took a step forward with respect to our opening game and hopefully we will take another one in our final game.”

Maradona’s side top Group B heading into Tuesday’s match against Greece in Polokwane.

“We are in a good position,” said Messi. “We have almost assured ourselves a place in the next round so everyone is calm and looking forward to our next game against Greece.”
