The Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is defending plans to charge schools more money for their water supplies.

The Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny said it was unacceptable that parents around the country are being forced to raise money to pay for such services.

Mr Kenny said that one school in Galway is facing a bill of €8,000 while another one in Louth will have to pay €10,000.

However, Mr Ahern said that the bills are based on the amount of water consumed and must be charged in accordance with EU regulations.
