Sea warning after kayakers rescued

People taking to the water over the Easter weekend have been warned that sea conditions remain unpredictable after 12 kayakers were rescued today off the Co Antrim coast.

The group of mainly teenagers got into difficulty off Portballintrae around lunchtime, with some suffering from sea sickness and exhaustion.

A number of lifeboats were involved in the operation to bring them back to shore.

Eleven of the group where transferred onto the large all-weather Portrush Lifeboat whilst the Inshore Lifeboat escorted the one remaining kayaker back to Portballintrae Harbour.

None of the group required medical attention.

Steve Carson, Watch Manager at Belfast Coastguard, said:

“Whilst the sun is shining, the wind can make conditions tricky and unpredictable.

“It is recommended that you contact us and let us know of your plans. It can help in incident situations.

“If you see anyone in trouble at sea or on the coast, please call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
