The North's First and Deputy First Ministers have joined in the condemnation of last night's mortar bomb attack on an RUC base at Bessbrook in south Armagh.

David Trimble and Seamus Mallon said in a joint statement that those responsible "have taken no interest in the careless risk to life posed by such an indiscriminate action".

It is now feared that the mortar bomb may not have exploded, resulting in the evacuation of further homes in the area.

The attack is believed to be the work of dissident republicans.
