Tánaiste: The main thing that tackles youth unemployment is job creation

Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has said that the main way of tackling youth unemployment is to create jobs.

His comments come after the coalition was criticised by the OECD for not tackling the issue of youth employment and letting tens of thousands emigrate in the search for work.

Minister Gilmore is adamant the Government has not sat on its hands and let the issue be dealt with by emigration.

"No, that's not the case," he said. "The main thing that tackles youth unemployment is the creation of jobs.

"We have turned around a situation from before this Government was elected from 250,000 jobs were lost in the Irish economy over the previous three years to one where over 30,000 jobs were created in the last year.

"We are seeing new employment being created now in the economy at the rate of about 650 a week."
