Research reveals fall in alcohol consumption during pregnancy

Irish women are drinking less during pregnancy, according to new research by a team of medical experts attached to the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland.

However in their report, ‘Alcohol Consumption in Pregnancy: Results from the general practice setting’, the health experts said they are concerned at the amount women drink in the months before they conceive.

The Irish Examiner reports that researchers say the time of "greatest vulnerability" to alcohol for a foetus is before conception and in the early stages of pregnancy.

Medics want mandatory labelling of alcohol regarding the risks of drinking in the period immeditately before conception.
