Three police officers were recovering from shock today following an early morning bomb attack on a new housing development in Derry.

The Royal Ulster Constabulary officers were investigating a burning car which had been abandoned near a number of houses under construction in the Cornshell Fields in the city at around 12.30am.

As their vehicle passed the car, there was an explosion at the side of the road.

No-one was injured but the three officers were treated for shock.

The security forces have sealed off the housing development while Army bomb disposal experts examined the scene.

Around 100 homes on the Cornshell Fields development are occupied.
