Michael Ballack’s third Barclays Premiership goal of the season handed Chelsea a crucial 1-0 victory at Bolton to maintain the pressure on leaders Manchester United.

The Germany captain headed home Frank Lampard’s left-wing corner in first-half stoppage-time to secure the reigning champions three points.

Bolton created several half-chances but, with England skipper John Terry in imperious form, the visitors’ defence held firm.

Andriy Shevchenko, Chelsea’s £30million signing, was again largely disappointing and his ineffectiveness led to him being substituted in the 77th minute.
