There was mixed news today for Cork City boss Damien Richardson on the eve of the kick-off to the new season.

Colm Carroll, the club’s promising, young striker, is to have surgery to repair a cruciate knee ligament and will be out for up to six months.

There was better news on John O’Flynn, who missed out on the Setanta Cup opener at Dungannon Swifts on Monday night after a scan showed that he just has a build-up of scar tissue.

“John just needs to break that scar tissue down now and physio and massage will do the job, said Richardson.

“I am hoping we can have him back for the league opener at Waterford on Friday night week.”

Meanwhile, Kevin Doyle returned from injury for Reading last night, while Colin Doyle helped Birmingham City move to the top of the championship in their 1-0 win over Leeds.

Elsewhere, Cobh’s Stephen O’Halloran won his second U21 cap in Ireland’s 1-0 win over Slovakia at the Madeira Cup series.

Billy Clarke played 89 minutes of the opening tie, finally making his Irish U21 debut, but has now been recalled by Ipswich.
