Henson recalled after suspension

Gavin Henson has rejoined the Toulon squad following his week-long suspension for a nightclub brawl with team-mates and is expected to play against Montpellier on Sunday.

Having delayed their expected decision on Henson’s future from Friday, the club today announced that Henson will remain with the Top 14 side, where he is on a short-term contract.

A statement on the club website read: “This morning, club president Mourad Boudjellal and the staff of Rugby Club Toulonnais decided to reintegrate Welsh centre Gavin Henson in the team.”

The statement continued: "Gavin Henson therefore remains at the disposition of the squad in his capacity as a medical wildcard for Clement Marienval.''

Henson, who has only played twice for Toulon since his arrival in February, is also awaiting a meeting with the Welsh Rugby Union over the fracas – along with Andy Powell, recently suspended by Wasps over his involvement in a pub brawl that saw the 29-year-old back-rower knocked unconscious.

Henson joined Toulon for an initial five months to cover for the injured Marienval, hoping to convince head coach Philippe Saint-Andre to give him a new two-year deal as well as revive his Wales career ahead of the World Cup.

He last played for his country in the 2009 RBS 6 Nations before a combination of personal problems and injuries prompted him to take unpaid leave from the Ospreys.

After some reality television appearances, he signed with Saracens to end an 18-month period out of the game but made only four appearances and just one start in four months at the club.

The 29-year-old was initially hampered by a hamstring injury on his arrival in France, but made a try-scoring debut against Stade Francais and made his second start in another victory over Toulouse.

He will now see out the season with Toulon but will have to wait to see whether a new deal is forthcoming, with the signing of Australia star Matt Giteau in addition to the established presence of England’s Jonny Wilkinson leaving Saint-Andre uncertain whether he can accommodate Henson next term.
