The North's First Minister David Trimble has dismissed this morning's statement by the IRA that it is prepared to return to talks with the decommissioning body.

The UUP leader said the statement "bore all the hallmarks of a pre-emptive strike to try and shift the blame onto other people rather than to try and make progress".

However, Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams said the IRA has now moved the issue of weapons from being an obstacle and created space for those who genuinely want to move ahead.

He called on the British prime minister to deliver on the commitments made by his government in the Good Friday Agreement.
