US firm Intel has announced plans to close its Co Kildare plant for more than two weeks at the end of this year as part of a cost-cutting programme.
The 16-day closure has taken many of the company’s 3,200 employees by surprise, with staff told they must use their holiday allowance during the shutdown.
Workers who have already taken all their due holidays will be forced to take the time off without pay.
Intel blamed the decision on the current economic situation, describing it as “one of the deepest recessions this industry has been through”.
