A UK police officer stabbed as he came to the aid of a knife attack victim has been named as Pc Steven Jay.

A UK police officer stabbed as he came to the aid of a knife attack victim has been named as Pc Steven Jay.

The 52-year-old Pc Jay and his dog Aman are recovering from the attack which happened shortly after 8pm yesterday.

They were injured when they tried to arrest a 21-year-old man suspected of stabbing another man in the stomach, police said.

Police were called to Oulton Road in Ipswich shortly after 8pm where they found a man with a wound to his stomach.

Pc Jay was treated in hospital last night for several knife wounds to his arm and back. It is believed protective clothing prevented more serious injuries.

The 47-year-old man who was wounded at the address in Oulton Road was operated on last night at Ipswich Hospital for several stab wounds to the stomach; he is said to be in a stable condition.

The police dog had emergency surgery last night at a veterinary clinic for a number of stab wounds.

The animal is said to be recovering well and it is hoped there will be no lasting damage.

A 21-year-old man remains in custody at the Ipswich Police Investigation Centre.
