Mumba slams scanty dressing

Samantha Mumba - who had eyeballs popping out with a barely-there outfit at the Brit Awards - has hit out at stars who undress for success.

Samantha Mumba - who had eyeballs popping out with a barely-there outfit at the Brit Awards - has hit out at stars who undress for success.

The singer took a swipe at female performers who try to grab the headlines with tiny costumes and said it did not work.

She told the May edition of celebrity style magazine InStyle: ‘‘I think it’s a bit sad to wear a bikini to sell records.’’

Mumba, who has had three top 10 hits, wore a daring scoop-fronted sash dress which was open almost to the navel when she arrived at the Brit Awards in February.

She said: ‘‘I never let anyone tell me what to wear. I only wear something if I like it.’’

But Mumba dismissed the idea of wearing revealing clothes to increase the profile of pop hopefuls.

She said: ‘‘The guys may look and go ‘Phwoarr’, but they won’t go off and buy your record. You don’t gain.’’

Teenage pop queen Britney Spears is among those who have been seen donning a bikini top and hot pants as a promotional aid in her latest video.
