Vic vies for Greatwood Gold Cup

David Pipe is praying conditions at Newbury do not dry out too much ahead of Our Vic’s run in the Raymond Mould Supporting Greatwood Gold Cup tomorrow.

The 12-year-old has enjoyed a fantastic start to 2010, having won the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock before filling the runner-up spot in the Blue Square Gold Cup at the same track.

He drops back a mile in trip for this weekend’s Newbury feature and his trainer admits he would prefer conditions to be more testing.

“He’s been in great form and, for a 12-year-old, he’s having a great season,” said Pipe.

“I suppose dropping back to two and a half miles he could do with the ground a bit softer ground as it looks as though it’s drying out, but hopefully it’s still going to be a bit tacky.

“We’ll see how he gets on at the weekend before deciding whether to go to Cheltenham, but he has a few entries there.

“Then it will be down to David Johnson (owner) whether he wants him to go for the National or not as he has three or four for the race.”
