Environmental health officers detected the potentially harmful bacteria at two plants in Navan.

Meath County Council is advising people in the area to boil water for at least 10 minutes before using it for any purpose.

Although most forms of e-coli are harmless, some produce a powerful toxin that can cause severe illness.
