Ferrari boss calls for 'revolution'

Ferrari boss Jean Todt has called for a Formula One “revolution” if the sport’s astronomical costs are to be cut.

The sport spends billions each season to put 20 cars on the grid for 18 races, prompting many in the paddock to demand change.

Max Mosley, president of world governing body the FIA, believes at least 50% of costs could be slashed with simple measures, but he is struggling find agreement among teams.

They too want lower budgets but are keen to avoid losing ground on their rivals in the process.

Todt, Ferrari’s managing director, believes widespread changes are necessary if spending is to be trimmed.

He said: “The teams’ budgets are already huge. If we want to cut the costs we need a real revolution throughout Formula One.

“It’s idiotic to say that doing less testing would be enough. Each team employs between 800 to 1,000 employees. To be more competitive one needs to invest a lot.

“This is Formula One today and each team knows their spending limits. To change, a revolution is needed.”
