Fine Gael are meeting in Leinster House to put in place arrangements for the election of a new leader.

Three known candidates have already emerged from the aftermath of the heave against John Bruton.

Limerick TD Michael Noonan and popular Dublin deputy Jim Mitchell, who ousted Mr Bruton, have been joined on the ticket by Mayo TD Enda Kenny. Immediately after Deputy Bruton was overthrown, Ivan Yates ruled himself out of the contest, narrowing the field of possible challengers.

Mr Bruton will now take up a position on the party's backbenches, but has pledged that his successor will have his full support.
