Met Éireann predicts St Stephen's day thaw

Met Eireann has said today that a thaw is due to set in from tomorrow.

Met Éireann has said today that a thaw is due to set in from tomorrow.

Snow is to be replaced by wind and rain going into next week.

It follows a new record low for December: Dublin Airport saw temperatures fall to minus 11.4 degrees on Thursday night.

Gerald Fleming from Met Éireann has warned of flooding after the snow has melted.

"The change in our weather is coming through St Stephen's day, Sunday and Monday," he said.

"We are going to get much windier weather, and much wetter weather and the that weather will last through to next Tuesday and there could be quite significant rain during Monday and Tuesday.

"This is why we have some risk of flooding. The other thing to emphasise is that even though we do have a thaw for a few days it won't get rid of all the ice."
