The trial of the three Irishmen accused of training anti-government rebels in Colombia is due to begin later today.

Niall Connolly, James Monaghan and Martin McCauley were arrested in August last year after leaving territory controlled by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), a left-wing guerrilla army which has been fighting the Colombian Government for almost 40 years.

They were subsequently charged with training the rebels in bomb-making techniques and travelling on false documents.

The three men were due in court for a preliminary hearing last month, but they refused to leave their jail cells to attend the hearing, saying they cannot receive a fair trial.
