The Government is being told it has serious questions to answer after it emerged that the former Minister for Health was told by his own civil servants that plans to abolish the HSE were “unworkable” and should be dropped.
Fianna Fáil Health Spokesperson Billy Kelleher said it suggests the coalition's health policy is now in tatters, and that it puts pressure on James Reilly's continued participation in Government.
"It's extraordinary that we had a situation where the Government, for the last three and a half years, was pursuing a health policy agenda that was unworkable," he said.
"And they were made aware of this by the department itself, which is responsible … for implementing the policy."
The comments from the HSE are contained in a ministerial briefing prepared by Department personnel for the new Minister for Health, outlining current issues and challenges. The document was made public yesterday evening.
