The Residents Against Racism organisation has accused the Gardaí of illegally deporting a Nigerian asylum-seeker yesterday morning.

The group said Michael Alabi was on hunger strike at a hostel on Dublin's Gardiner Street when he was removed from the premises by Gardaí on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Rosanna Flynn said he was then deported despite the fact that his case is under appeal.

"His original application was turned down, but everyone is allowed to appeal that decision and that was the stage that he was at," she said.

RAR is due to hold a demonstration outside the offices of the Garda National Immigration Bureau in Dublin today to protest against the deportation.
