Fianna Fail MEP Brian Crowley has insisted that Irish farmers have nothing to fear from the upcoming mid-term review negotiations on the EU’s Common Agriculture Policy.
Agriculture Commissioner Franz Fischler has proposed major changes to the CAP, including reduced subsidies.
Mr Crowley said Ireland and other countries will fiercely contest these proposals.
"There’s a very positive outlook . . . and there’s a very strong level of support for the Irish Government position on this," he said.
"I think farmers can be assured that the Government and that we in Europe will continue to fight to ensure that there’s a fair deal for everybody."
