A woman has been killed in a road crash in Co Westmeath this afternoon.

A woman has been killed in a road crash in Co Westmeath this afternoon.

The woman died when two cars collided on the M6 Dublin to Galway Road, near Moate at 2.45pm.

A woman in her 30s - who was driving the other car - was taken to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore where her condition is described as stable.

The route is closed westbound between junction six for Moate East and junction seven for Moate West, with diversions in place via Moate village.

Gardaí and the emergency services are still on the scene this evening.
