The Labour Party is calling for tougher penalties for perpetrators of knife crime.

It comes after the country's top criminal judge expressed concern about the number of sentences that are reduced on appeal.

Speaking at a lecture in UCC, Mr Justice Paul Carney said the number of fatal stabbings is "out of control".

Labour Justice spokesperson Pat Rabbitte said this afternoon that the current system is not working.
