The Irish Farmers Association is launching a programme to recognise the role of women in Irish agriculture.

Marking International Women’s Day, the IFA says almost 40,000 women are involved in farm work across the country and it’s time their contribution was acknowledged.

IFA spokeswoman Mary Caroll said:

"[Women] may not be involved in farming in their own right, but they play a huge role, if you want, behind the scenes. They carry out an awful lot of the management and admin work on farms. They’re involved in farming as well on the actual farm, even though they may not own it in their name."
