Ascot are “cautiously excited and optimistic” ahead of tomorrow’s opening day of the Royal meeting at the redeveloped track.
The course has undergone a massive £200m (€290m) overhaul but the changes were not a total success when a limited crowd were invited to the inaugural meeting three weeks ago.
However, Ascot’s head of public relations Nick Smith is hoping most of the problems experienced that day have now been ironed out in time for the showpiece five-day fixture.
“It is a really exciting time for everyone involved and we are just rehearsing the opening ceremony and testing the systems and the like,” said Smith.
“We’ve only had three weeks since May 27 and we’ve had a chance to have a look at various things that came to light but we haven’t had time to alleviate all of them.
“There will be lots of teething problems tomorrow inevitably, we did the stand in 20 months and there hasn’t been much time for a handover but we are pretty confident that we are in exceptional shape.
“The feedback we had from the meeting three weeks ago was very positive but as there was no charging it was a more a case of ‘come and help us’,” continued Smith.
“This week we are charging and it is a premier meeting but we are aware of that and we know we have to deliver a product considerably better than we did then – and we will do.
“Of course things will go wrong but we are just hoping people have a bit of patience.
“We are cautiously excited and optimistic but we are fully aware that it is going to be a difficult day.
“We’ve got a great card though and a fabulous King’s Stand Stakes with three Australians in the line-up which is a major day for international racing.”
