Thousands left without phone services in west

Thousands of eircom customers in Co Mayo have been struck by a breakdown in phone services this afternoon.

Thousands of eircom customers in Co Mayo have been struck by a breakdown in phone services this afternoon.

The failure in Claremorris happened after a main cable was damaged by a contractor working in the area. Landlines and some mobile stations were hit.

A company spokesperson said the loss of service had not been complete but admitted several thousand customers had been affected.

Engineers are currently working to fix the problem.
