The Government will consider selling off State assets in an effort to balance the budget and ease pressure on the exchequer it was reported today.

Junior Finance Minister, Tom Parlon, has ordered a nationwide audit of State property to establish its value.

The audit will cover 1,200 buildings owned by the State, leasehold interests in 800 properties and rental accommodation in Dublin.

Mr Parlon has dismissed criticism saying that the move was vital at this time to allow the Government to continue to provide necessary improvements in the country's infrastructure.
