Fortune favours Golden Silver

Golden Silver capitalised on the last-fence fall of Osirixamix to claim the Grade Two Hilly Way Chase at Cork.

Golden Silver capitalised on the last-fence fall of Osirixamix to claim the Grade Two Hilly Way Chase at Cork.

Willie Mullins’ charge was sent off the 2-7 favourite for the two-mile heat but he looked booked for second as front-running outsider Osirixamix held a commanding advantage at the top of the straight.

Osirixamix cleared the penultimate fence and had about five lengths in hand only to crash into the last and unship Robbie Moran.

His departure left Golden Silver well clear under Emmet Mullins and he coasted home by 28 lengths from Hughies Grey.

Golden Silver was recording his third win in the contest having claimed the glory in 2009 and last year when the race was run at Fairyhouse.

The winning rider said: “He didn’t jump at all for me early on.

“Osirixamix slipped the field down the back and we had to chase him. I think he was tying up in front and it all came down to the jump at the last.”

Knockfierna (5-4 favourite) is set for another step up in grade after landing the odds in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Lombardstown Mares Novice Chase.

Charles Byrnes’ charge was having her third start over fences having won at Wexford last time and she was left in front when Mayo Mystique, who was attempting to make all, crashed out at the third last.

Knockfierna kept on well under Davy Russell and easily held the challenge of Shop Dj by four and a quarter lengths.

Byrnes said: “I had to twist Davy’s arm to get him to ride her as he was thinking of riding the second (Shop Dj), but I was pleased that he was on board.

“She was a bit clumsy early on but was grand after that and she will go for a Grade Two Chase at Limerick over Christmas now.”

Byrnes and Russell had earlier struck with 4-9 favourite Trifolium in the opening corkracecourse.ie Maiden Hurdle.

While Davy Condon had to settle for second aboard Shop Dj, he was firmly in charge of the Grade Three Cork Stayers Novice Hurdle aboard Corbally Ghost (100-30).

Notching up his third win on the bounce, Noel Meade’s charge knuckled down well as Best Served Cold tried to challenge, holding on by a length and three-quarters.

Condon said: “He is very tough. I was worried about getting him home so I dropped him in.

“He jumped great and it was a very good performance from a four year old. He showed plenty of heart I think he is a very good horse and will make a nice chaser.”

Madame Mado (7-1) could chase some big-race glory after defying top weight in the Mallow.ie Handicap Hurdle.

Winning trainer Willie Murphy said afterwards: “She is a good mare and its great to win with her as she was bought to be a broodmare.

“We might try to sneak her in at the bottom of a handicap hurdle next and I wouldn’t rule out the MCR Hurdle (now the Boylesports.com Hurdle at Leopardstown on January 28).”
