There is an old saying that sometimes struggles to have the impact it might, especially at this time of celebration and, hopefully, happiness.
That saying — “go easy when your jug is full” — can all too easily be dismissed as a sour harrumph from the baa humbug school of begrudgery.
However, we can rely on reality to intrude and put things in a sobering context we should at least consider and, if we are wise, appreciate.
This year, as Christmas 2018 moves towards its climax, a tsunami hit the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra killing at least 222 people and injured hundreds of others.
Thousands of residents were forced to evacuate to higher ground — even in the unlikely event they had a turkey in the fridge.
Those living on the coast did not see or feel any warning signs before waves of up to three metres washed ashore.
This new tsunami evoked the Indian Ocean tsunami triggered by an earthquake on December 26, 2004, which killed 226,000 people in 13 countries, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia.
Go easy when your jug is full indeed.
Happy Christmas everyone.
