FIFA postpones tomorrow's meeting with EU after submitting new transfer plans

The International Football Association (FIFA) yesterday requested to delay tomorrow's meeting on the reform of the international football transfer system with the European Commission, said Amelia Torres, the commission's competition spokeswoman.

The International Football Association (FIFA) yesterday requested to delay tomorrow's meeting on the reform of the international football transfer system with the European Commission, said Amelia Torres, the commission's competition spokeswoman.

"The commission has received a new document, which it is now studying," she said, declining to comment its content.

The new negotiation document is based on the proposal made by FIFA last October, and takes into account the various reactions received by the concerned parties - FIFA's European counterpart UEFA, the professional football players' union Fifpro and the Commission, FIFA said.

"That is all we can say for the moment. Discussions are still on-going," a FIFA spokesman said.

A new meeting has tentatively been rescheduled for Jan 16, but still needs to be confirmed by the commission, he said.

Meanwhile, the commission's employment spokesman Andrew Fielding denied comments made by Labour Euro MP Glyn Ford that Europe's football transfer system will have to scrapped altogether.

"Yes, there is a principle of free movement of workers, but football players still have contracts to follow just like you and me," he said.
