Hundreds of students are taking to the streets of Dublin today to raise cash for two of the capital’s hospitals.
Some 550 nursing and medical students from Trinity College hoping to raise €100,000 will don scrubs and white coats as part of their annual ‘Medday’ charity event.
The money will go towards a ventilator for The Coombe Women’s Hospital and an advanced computer system facilitating visual online x-rays at The Rotunda.
The university campus will be bustling with attractions ranging from inflatable sumo wrestling and bungee runs to egg-and-spoon races, said Medday chairperson, Tighe Crombie.
Renowned comedian David McSavage is to host an innovative on-stage bachelor(ette) auction while later in the evening will see a ’Med Fusion’ Variety Night with music, dancing and comedians.
A quality raffle will also take place with prizes including a weekend away in a four star hotel, flying lessons, a laptop, and €400 worth of vouchers for a top hairdresser.
This year’s patron is Munster rugby star Paul O’Connell who has pledged his support to the event. A rugby jersey signed by him will be up for auction on eBay.
With health promotion an important part of the day there will be stands assessing blood pressure, weight, height and body mass index (BMI) with senior medical students around the campus.
Last year €60,000 was raised and donated to palliative care and oncology services in the AMNCH Hospital and the Trinity Access Programme.
