A large explosion rocked Baghdad near the heavily-fortified Green Zone today, sending a thick black plume of smoke into the sky.

A large explosion rocked Baghdad near the heavily-fortified Green Zone today, sending a thick black plume of smoke into the sky.

The explosion happened at 10.10am local time and bursts of automatic weapon fire were heard immediately after.

It was unclear what caused the blast or whether there were any casualties.

The Green Zone is the site of the Iraqi government and the US Embassy.
