A British student is in a Miami jail after allegedly telling a Miami airport security official she had bombs in her carry-on bag.

According to the arrest report, Samantha Maroon, 21, placed her carry-on bag on the belt at a security check, telling a Transportation Security Administration screener: “Hey be careful, I have three bombs in here,” Miami-Dade police Officer Alan Trivett said.

Asked to repeat herself, Marson, originally from Bridgnorth, Shropshire, allegedly made the same statement twice more.

Marson was arrested for making a false bomb report on Saturday and was taken to Miami-Dade County Jail, where she was still being held yesterday.

She will be released on bail if she can come up with a bond.

Marson’s next court date was scheduled for February 6. Jail officials did not have information on whether she had a lawyer.

A British Foreign Office official said they were aware of a British citizen being detained for making a false bomb report.

A meeting with the woman was planned today.

“We are beside ourselves with worry,” her father Jim Marson, aged 75, told The Sun. “She phoned at about 3am on Sunday and was hysterical.”

Mr Marson said the comments at the checkpoint must have been made in jest.

“I’m sure Samantha will accept that it’s a silly thing to say but she’s the sort of girl who might have thought it would make people laugh,” he said.
