Roche disappointed by British nuclear plans

The Minister for the Environment Dick Roche said today he was disappointed that plans were being made for a new generation of nuclear energy plants in Britain.

The Minister for the Environment Dick Roche said today he was disappointed that plans were being made for a new generation of nuclear energy plants in Britain.

The British government is due to announce a review of energy policy, which is expected to include greater emphasis on atomic power.

Prime Minister Tony Blair has signalled that building more nuclear stations is the only way to meet UK energy needs and tackle global warming.

Minister Roche said the nuclear solution would never work: “Basically the argument which is being put forward by some in the British government is that the way forward is by rolling out more nuclear power stations.

“The reality is we have to learn from the mistakes of the past.

“Its one thing to generate electricity cheaply for this generation but you’re leaving the next generation a problem and for the next 1,000 years you're leaving people with a problem.”
